課程概述

Teaching Methods and Materials in English is a foundational course for those who are interested in English language teaching. It is a prerequisite course for Practicum in English and Internship in English, which together will help you prepare for your future language teaching career.

The first half of the semester covers a review of methods and how to approach the idea of methods in critical, contextually-sensitive ways. The second half of the semester is more “hands-on” in nature: we will examine some basic principles that are useful for designing a course, planning a lesson, and selecting / adapting / creating teaching materials. Throughout the semester we will also discuss important debates in the field, and continuously reflect on the current landscape of English language teaching in Taiwan.

** This course will be conducted in both English and Chinese.

課程目標
By the end of this course you will:
 Be familiar with the key developments and debates in the field.
 Know the basics of designing a course, planning a lesson, and selecting / adapting / creating relevant language teaching materials.
 Develop a preliminary set of language teaching principles that respond to various contextual and student needs.
 Start engaging in dialogues that deal with the tensions between theory and practice.

說明
1.
Attendance and participation
20%
This includes weekly assignments that will be shared and discussed in class. Attendance is mandatory. If you will not be able to attend a class please e-mail the instructor at least two days in advance.
2.
Micro-teaching
30%
This includes two opportunities of micro-teaching (one in person and one online; 12 minutes each). Your teaching will be peer-reviewed.
3.
Interview presentation
25%
In pairs, interview one of your secondary school English teachers. The interview will be an opportunity for you to explore how teachers deal with the relationship between theory and practice. The depth of your interview, analysis, and reflection will determine the grade you get. There will be many ways to do this – further explanation of the interview will be provided in W4.
4.
Seminar
25%
For the seminar in the final week, you will be asked to get into groups of 3 or 4. In the seminar, each group will give a 25-minute presentation. In the presentation, each group should 1) introduce an English language course that your group has co-designed, 2) provide a sample lesson plan for one of the classes in the course, 3) offer a sample worksheet or handout that will be used in the chosen class, and 4) deliver a short teaching demonstration of the class. Rigor and originality of the entire package presented will determine your grade. More details of the seminar will be discussed after the midterm week.
